Wining & dining on the beachfront at De Wiswijf Seafront Restaurant

De Viswijf

If good food and good service is the key to keeping you smiling, De Viswijf Seafront Restaurant, situated on the beachfront at Jeffreys Bay’s main beach, will have you grinning and coming back for more.

The owners, Fred and Nadine Klemp, are passionate about food, wine and customer satisfaction – and it shows.

Established in 1999, De Viswijf, which was recently refurbished, has earned a reputation as a family restaurant where you can enjoy excellent food. As a result, it has won several top food industry accolades, including the coveted Diner’s Club awards for their wine list.

Shiver me timbers!

Arriving at the eatery, we were received with a friendly smile from Lisa, the manager, who led us to our table on an enclosed deck overlooking a sun-dappled sea, framed by mountains in the distance right outside the window.

You can choose to sit inside the restaurant, which has a cosy nautical theme. For colder nights, there is an old cast-iron wood stove that helps to heat up the venue nicely.

Raydene, our waitress, was very attentive and knowledgeable about their famed wine list, which features from budget-friendly choices to award-winning wines.

For starters, we tried their crumbed mushrooms and biltong soup. The soup, served with sliced bread to dip, was creamy and tasty. The mushrooms were melt-in-the-mouth and the portions were so generous, we needed to stop halfway to leave room for the main course.

There is something on the menu for everyone – tempting pastas, chicken dishes, steaks, and a couple of South African favourites like babotie, oxtail and tripe. J-Bay being a seaside town, seafood lovers are also spoilt for choice at De Viswijf Seafront Restaurant, offering fresh calamari, prawns, hake, kingklip and sole (subject to availability).

A menu with a wide & appetizing selection

Some scrumptious seafood

I must admit, I was torn on what to choose, but ended up taking the sole, which was served perfectly pan-fried. My husband chose their Tikka Masala Chicken, which was served in a small potjie pot along with fresh vegetables. Our meal lived up to De Viswijf’s fame!

We briefly enjoyed the fresh evening air on the outer deck, wine glass in hand, before we decided the dessert menu was too much to resist. We found old favourites like crème brulee, chocolate mousse, brownies and local is lekker sweet treats like malva pudding and peppermint crisp tart.

It is the best crème brulee I have ever tasted and I have not stopped thinking about it since!

De Viswijf Seafront Restaurant also offers a small private function area, the Wine Cellar, which is available as an alternative, intimate venue where these delicious meals can also be enjoyed.
